Pham Duc Thanh Trio

Biography

The three-person Pham Duc Thanh has proven itself one of the most distinguished interpreters of Vietnamese music in North America today. With a repertoire mainly composed of ceremonial songs from ancient Vietnam, the group also performs traditional theatrical music and popular folkloric tunes that tell stories for example, of a lover waiting for his beloved or the celebration of the harvest. Duc Thanh, the group leader, is a world-renowned player of the dan bau (a monochord) and the dan tranh (a 16-string zither). A graduate of the most prestigious schools of music in Hanoi and Saigon, he came to Canada via Germany, and has lived and performed here since 1996. Vocalist Lieu Nguyet Lan equally famous for the expressiveness of her "crystalline" voice studied singing, both traditional and contemporary, in Saigon. These two masters are brilliantly accompanied by their son, Nam, playing the dan bau and percussion.
