Pham Duc Thanh Trio
Biography
The three-person Pham Duc Thanh has proven itself one of the most distinguished interpreters of Vietnamese music in North America today. With a repertoire mainly composed of ceremonial songs from ancient Vietnam, the group also performs traditional theatrical music and popular folkloric tunes that tell stories – for example, of a lover waiting for his beloved or the celebration of the harvest. Duc Thanh, the group leader, is a world-renowned player of the dan bau (a monochord) and the dan tranh (a 16-string zither). A graduate of the most prestigious schools of music in Hanoi and Saigon, he came to Canada via Germany, and has lived and performed here since 1996. Vocalist Lieu Nguyet Lan – equally famous for the expressiveness of her "crystalline" voice – studied singing, both traditional and contemporary, in Saigon. These two masters are brilliantly accompanied by their son, Nam, playing the dan bau and percussion.
