The Zheng

Chinese Traditional Instrument

The zheng (also called guzheng) is sometimes known as the Chinese zither or Chinese harp. One of China's oldest instruments, it was originally called the qin and can be traced back as far as 237 BC. Earlier versions of the zheng vary from 13 to 16 strings, while its contemporary counterpart usually has 21 strings, though a few models boast 25 or more. The zheng is normally tuned to a pentatonic scale with a pitch range exceeding 3 octaves. Several zheng schools exist in China and each represent different traditions, styles and techniques; the better known ones are Chaozhou in the east, Shandong in the northeast, Inner Mongolia in the north, Kejia and Canton in the south.
