Pjotr Leschenko is the "King of Russian Tango". From the 1930s up to the 1950s no other Russian emigrant singer can be compared to him in terms of his popularity. Through not a single recording of his music was officially released in his own country. His records had to be smuggled back to Russia where they were often bootlegged. As in other counties tango was very popular in Turkey in the late 20s and the 30s. Originally tangos in Turkey were performed by female soloists only. The first man to win an audience was Ibrahim Özgür. His velvety voice was predestined for romantic tangos, and he also became famous for his talented compositions and arrangements, which have a very special touch of nostalgia.
