Indian Music

Indian classical music is one of the world's oldest and most distinguished musical cultures. It is an incredibly rich and intellectually complex, yet at the same time emotionally powerful musical tradition passed on orally from guru to student.

At the heart of Indian music is the raga, a tonal framework for composition and improvisation characterized by its own particular moods and associated with a specific season or time of day. Dynamic, highly intricate and structurally sophisticated, a raga should colour the mind and stimulate an emotional response in the listener. Instead of describing a mood, the raga helps create and explore it.

A raga may be further characterized by key phrases or a melodic outline as a series of note patterns in ascending and descending movements. Depending on the ability and artistry of the performer, nearly 90 per cent of Indian music can be improvised while still adhering to the strict rules of the raga. A raga starts off with an alap (introduction), a slow and introspective exploration of a mood. Here the musician displays an understanding of the details of the raga as well as his musical knowledge and creativity. This is followed by the jor (joining), where a rhythmic pulse is introduced and developed through taans (melodic extensions and patterns). The acceleration culminates in the jhala, a fast-paced section of complex rhythmic patterns on the main and rhythm strings.

Next is the gat (marked by the entrance of the tabla), a fixed melodic composition set to a tala (metred time cycle) which can range from three to 108 beats. The gat is a recurring theme throughout the performance and forms the basis for improvisation. Improvisations take the form of taans, as well as layakari (rhythmic variations), and gradually expand in length, variety and speed. After each improvisation, the sum (first beat of the rhythm cycle) is a point of culmination and resolution. A fast gat may also conclude with a jhala, accelerating until the final tihai (phrase repeated three times), in a stunning display of speed and virtuosity!
